| Name: | Tenjoin Asuka (OU) |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 1971-07-28 |
Character: Tenjoin Asuka
Series/Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh GX
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: 20: Birthday: April 30
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Sexuality: Bisexual (though she hasn't discovered yet that she can be attracted to girls)
Appearance: Asuka is a very pretty, some might even say beautiful, young woman. She has long light brown hair that she wears very simply, with most of hanging down her back. Her eyes are large and brownish-gray. While at the Academy, she wore the standard uniform, but since then has gravitated towards more commonplace clothing. She normally wears colors such as blue, white, green, and purple, usually in light to medium shades, and frequently wears layers of clothing. When she is brought to Econtra, she's wearing a dark blue skirt that ends just above her knees, a cream colored blouse with a darker white shirt underneath it, and medium blue, ankle-high, slightly heeled boots and white socks.
Personality: Tenjoin Asuka is a very strong-willed young woman. When her brother vanished during his first year in Duel Academia, she was determined to find him, no matter what, and never gave up on that goal. She is very serious and devoted to whatever goals she sets, and for the most part has decided that her career will take precedence over her love life. That is open to change, though she hasn't thought about it in so many words. She's also devoted to her friends, and cares a great deal about her brother, which is probably also one of the reasons she hasn't concerned herself with a love life at this point: someone has to look after Fubuki, after all. She can overestimate her own strength at some times, such as when she dueled against Manjoume in the second season and lost, leading to her time in the Society of Light. She's also sensible and logical a great deal of the time, and wants very much to be taken seriously as a duelist over anything else.
Abilities/Strengths: Asuka is a very good duelist, quite worthy of having been in Obelisk Blue, and as such is a reasonably good strategist and a quick thinker. She has a reasonably good singing voice. With her logical and reasoned way of thinking, she can solve some problems relatively easily, though her solutions tend to focus around dueling, as that's how she's grown up handling most situations. That may or may not relate to how the problems she encounters in Econtra can be solved. She speaks fluent Japanese and English, and can also write in English.
Notable Posssessions: Asuka has her Duel Disk and her dueling deck with her when she's brought to Econtra, as well as some books she had in her carry-on bag with her when she was taken and a photograph album of her friends and family. The books revolve around dueling history and tactics for the most part. She also has a scarf her mother gave her; she keeps that with her most of the time, whether she's wearing it or not, as it holds great personal value to her.
Weaknesses: Asuka is very much out of her depth when it comes to problems and situations that can't be solved with a cool head and a quick dueling deck. She isn't used to defending herself physically and would be vulnerable to any magic that could harm her. Asuka tries very hard not to let too much affect her outwardly, but inside is a different matter altogether. She wonders sometimes if she really is as good as her friends, because they've went on personal adventures and quests to grow as people and duelists, and while she tagged along most of the time, none of it really appeared to affect her. She projects a lot of outward strength, a great deal of which is real, but there is still a part of her that wonders if she's settled for being a dueling teacher because she can't be anything else. When her temper is tripped (which can happen when she's out of her usual environment of 'solve a problem by dueling it'), she has been known to directly smack the person who did it, as Misawa and Fubuki can both testify to.
History: Asuka is two years younger than her brother Fubuki. They had a normal life, both of them learning how to duel at young ages, and when Fubuki was fifteen, he went off to the famed Duel Academia. Asuka deeply wanted to go as well, though she had to argue quite a bit with her parents over it when Fubuki vanished mysteriously a few months into his first year. She was able to persuade them, and because she had attended the dueling middle school and had made excellent grades, she was placed in Obelisk Blue. Even before the school year began, she was known as the "Queen" of Obelisk Blue, because of her skill in dueling.
Asuka made friends at the Academy, including Marufuji Ryou, her brother's best friend, and Yuuki Juudai, who was quickly wowing everyone at the school with his dueling talent and his carefree, open-hearted attitude. Asuka was very impressed by him when he beat her during a duel in the early part of the school year. She still wanted more than anything to find her brother, and unknowingly got her chance when she was made one of the keepers of the seven keys to three special cards hidden under the school.
The Seven Stars, dark duelists who engaged in Shadow Games, came in search of the keys, and the very first one who attacked was Darkness. When Juudai defeated him, everyone received a surprise: Darkness was none other than Tenjoin Fubuki himself. Asuka's search was suddenly ended. But when Fubuki awoke, he had very nearly complete amnesia of the time he'd been gone. Asuka now had a new quest: to find a way to restore his memories.
That chance came when she herself dueled one of the Seven Stars, Titan, and she beat him, winning back her brother's memories. Fubuki was soon restored to his full normal personality, and not long after that, the rest of the Seven Stars were dealt with, including Daitoukuji, the kindly professor in charge of Osiris Red, who had turned out to be the last of the Stars and who had defeated Asuka, taking her key.
Not long before that ended, Manjoume Jun professed that he was in love with Asuka, and Fubuki joined forces with him to teach him how to win her heart. Asuka defeated Manjoume in the "love duel", and stated that she was more interested in dueling than she was in having a romantic life. Manjoume wasn't so easily dissuaded, and as the months passed, there were occasionally signs that she was not actually displeased by his attentions, though by the end of their school years together, nothing concrete had really come of the interest.
During Asuka's second year at the Academy, she wound up being pulled into the Society of Light, a cult led by Saioh Takuma, after being defeated by Manjoume in a duel when she wanted to prove to him that he was wrong about Saioh and the Society. Together they assisted Saioh in anything he wanted of them, up until first Manjoume, then Asuka herself, were freed from his brainwashing and returned to Juudai's side.
The rest of her year was relatively quiet for her as the rest of the events unfolded. But her third year would make up for that, as not only did new students from other Academies show up, but they all learned there was much more to Juudai than they had imagined before, and to the nature of the world as well. Multiple adventures happened as Juudai struggled against the forces against him. When Johan was lost during their trip back to Earth, Asuka was one of those who went with Juudai to find him, and became one of the sacrifices in Juudai's duel against Brron, which resulted in her being sent to a sort of dimensional pocket where Yubel was feeding off of her and the others there.
After Juudai and Yubel's mergence, Asuka and the others returned to life and to Duel Academia, ready to finish out their last year. But Juudai had been greatly changed by his experiences, and Asuka was quite worried about him. He was one of the few people who took her seriously as a duelist and she would always be grateful for that. Because of that friendship, she participated in a team duel with him, Rei, and Kenzan that helped Juudai to recover a great deal of his sense of fun, drawing him somewhat out of his melancholy after what had happened in the Dark World. It also helped Asuka herself decide what she was going to do after she graduated: she would further her education at a college in America, with the goal of being a teacher one day.
Eventually she did graduate, as one of the highest scoring graduates as well, and went on to college, keeping in touch with her friends through e-mail, phone calls, and regular mail. She had just finished her first year of college and was going home to visit her brother when she suddenly vanished from the plane and arrived in Econtra.
